Slovenia
This small nation, independent for only the last two decades, has much of what draws visitors to Europe, but without the crowds. A baroque capital, vineyards, mountains, skiing, castles, forests, beaches, island resorts, and traditional culture round out Slovenia, an easy, friendly place to visit that’s still off the beaten track.
Highlights
- Lake Bled
When visiting Slovenia, be sure to travel to one of the most picturesque spots in the country: Lake Bled. This large glacial lake, located in the Julian Alps in northwestern Slovenia, was formed over a tectonic basic, which is why the water has thermal properties. Sitting in the middle of this magical lake is Bled Island, and visitors can reach this remote landmark by renting kayaks or hopping on a boat with a group. Hiking trails, beautiful views, and secluded swimming areas surround Lake Bled, giving its visitors an array of activities to enjoy.
- Postojna Caves
Slovenia is home to Postojna Cave, one of Europe's largest underground cave systems. This system of caves, dating back over a million years ago, was carved out by the flowing Pivka River and became a staple tourist attraction in the early 1800s. Since then, Postojna Cave has been visited by over 39 million visitors from all over the world! The underground world is very similar to that above ground, full of mountains, rivers, tunnels, and subterranean spaces. Enjoy sightseeing within this spectacular world via a train ride, marveling at the naturally-created sculptures. Keep your eye out for baby dragons! Hundreds of years ago, the local people thought a dragon was living inside Postojna Cave and that these small olms were, in fact, baby dragons.
- Bled Castle
Perched high above the city on a cliff sits a medieval castle that charms visitors worldwide. Bled Castle offers travelers incredible views of the city, sparkling Bled Lake, and the mountains surrounding it. If you're lucky enough to visit on a clear day, you may get the chance to see the highest mountain in Slovenia, Mount Triglav. The original castle was built way back in 1011, and additions were slowly added on in the late middle ages, such as towers and improved fortifications. After suffering from an earthquake in the early 1500s, the castle was restored to what it still stands today. Bled Castle is home to a courtyard that features a historical museum showcasing the fascinating ancient history of Bled. This castle has sat proudly upon these towering cliffs for over 1,000 years and will remain a popular tourist destination for the years to come.
- Predjama Castle
Located in the small village of Predjama in south-central Slovenia, Predjama Castle is undoubtedly a sight to see. This is one of Slovenia's most famous castles, attracting thousands of tourists each year to marvel at the unique architecture. This castle is different from others because it's built directly within the mouth of a cave. Standing five stories high and containing 15 rooms, Predjama Castle has been rebuilt twice in history: after the war and an earthquake. This masterpiece boasted Gothic-style architecture and was once inhabited by the legendary robber baron Erazem Lueger. In addition to the stunning view, this castle has a secret network of tunnels for visitors to explore.
